The International Arts Minor
The arts and international education have the same goal: to inspire you to view the world and yourself from a new perspective.
The arts are an excellent entry through which other cultures may be studied. The study of visual arts, performing arts, built environments, and literature is inherently cross-cultural and international. Even the arts of the United States must be considered within their relationship to the arts of other countries to be fully appreciated. This interdisciplinary minor is designed for students in any major who wish to supplement their knowledge of other cultures through the arts.
| “The visual arts must communicate to the human spirit, forcing individuals to reflect on themselves and their existence beyond their own self-interest.”-- Dean Mitchell, artist |

“As the traveler who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate more lovingly, our own.” -- Margaret Mead, anthropologist |
The College of Arts and Architecture recognizes that there is no substitute for the direct exposure to other cultures. This is especially true when studying the arts of other cultures. Paintings, sculptures, buildings, and designed spaces must be experienced firsthand. Theatrical productions, musical performances, poems and novels cannot be fully appreciated without some knowledge of the culture that produced them. Consequently, a study abroad experience is among the requirements for the minor.

“Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. It speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. It transcends our ordinary lives and lets us imagine what is possible.” -- Richard Kamler, artist |
