International Programs
The study of visual arts, performing arts and built environments is inherently intercultural and international. For that reason, the College of Arts and Architecture is committed to international education. Many of its students and members of its faculty participate in international activities.
Two undergraduate programs and one graduate program in the college require study abroad for completion of those degrees. All architecture and landscape architecture majors spend a semester in Rome (ARCH) (LARCH) and all master of fine arts students in theatre study in London. All other majors in the college are strongly encouraged to study abroad. Penn State has dozens of study abroad programs that offer courses in the arts during the academic year. In addition, the College of Arts and Architecture has developed four summer programs to offer students additional study abroad alternatives. The School of Visual Arts sponsors summer programs in Puebla, Mexico, with the Department of Spanish and in Ireland with the Department of English. The School of Visual Arts also co-sponsors with the Department of Art History a summer program in Todi, Italy, in collaboration with the Department of Italian.
Members of the arts and architecture faculty demonstrate the importance of an international perspective when studying the arts. Historians in the college travel abroad to conduct their research and to present their findings. Visual artists create and exhibit their work in other countries. Performance artists seek performance opportunities around the world. Architects and landscape architects conduct research and serve as consultants in many different countries. Moreover, the college has initiated an international faculty exchange program to further encourage faculty members to develop their international contacts and to share those contacts with their students.
