Alice Schwartz Mattil Award in Art Education
Selected by the art education faculty to recognize
full-time undergraduate third- and fourth-year students enrolled
in the art education program whose career goal is teaching.
Brian
Betzler Memorial Award
Presented in memory of Brian Betzler by his parents
Helen and George Betzler, Jr., and grandfather George Betzler,
Sr., to recognize full-time third- or fourth-year undergraduates
in the Penn State School of Visual Arts who have exhibited exemplary
artistic achievement.
Bruce
Shobaken Undergraduate Honorary Endowed Award in Printmaking
Presented in honor of Professor Emeritus Bruce Shobaken
for his dedicated service to the University as an outstanding
instructor, and to recognize an undergraduate student in printmaking
with demonstrated excellence in the area of printmaking.
Dorothy
Hughes-Young Endowed Scholarship for Music Education and Art
Education
Established by Dorothy Hughes-Young (’57 B.S.
Music Ed.) and her husband, Ronald Young (’57 B.S. Agriculture),
to provide recognition for students pursuing studies in cultural
and ethnic diversity in the arts and significant artistic
endeavors in a foreign country (i.e. seminars, performances,
summer study programs, semester abroad, etc.). Consideration
will be given to an undergraduate and graduate student enrolled
or planning to enroll in the College of Arts and Architecture
with preference given to students majoring in music education
or art education with plans for a career in teaching.
Edwin
Zoller Scholarship
Awarded in memory of Edwin Zoller, professor emeritus
of art, to recognize outstanding students with a concentration
in painting.
Graham-Rath
Scholarship
Presented in memory of Margaret Graham Rath (’42
B.S. Art Ed. and M.F.A. Art) and her husband, Charles J. Rath
Jr., to recognize full-time undergraduate students enrolled
or planning to enroll in a B.F.A. program in the Penn State School of
Visual Arts who have achieved superior academic records and
manifested promise of outstanding academic success.
Harlan
E. and Suzanne Dudley Hoffa Dissertation Award in Art Education
Established by Dr. Harlan E. Hoffa (’59 D.Ed.),
professor emeritus in art education and former associate dean
of research and graduate studies in the College of Arts and
Architecture, and Suzanne Dudley Hoffa to honor and recognize
graduate students whose Ph.D. or D.Ed. dissertation displays
professional relevance, scholarly excellence, and clarity
of presentation in the Art Education Program in the Penn State School
of Visual Arts.
James
Howard and Barbara Frizzell Campbell Scholarship in Visual
Arts and Theatre
In memory of the late James Howard Campbell (’40
B.A. Commerce and Finance) and Barbara Frizzell Campbell,
by Ellen Campbell (’80 A.D. Liberal Arts and ’03
M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction) and James F. Campbell (’72
B.S. Law Enforcement and Corrections), to provide recognition
to undergraduate students majoring in visual arts or theatre.

Stephenson Endowed Award in Visual Arts
Established in honor of Professor and Director Emeritus
of the Penn State School of Visual Arts James Stephenson to honor and
recognize outstanding achievement by full-time undergraduate
students enrolled in the Penn state School of Visual Arts in the College
of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University
who are pursuing studies in cultural and ethnic diversity
in the arts and significant artistic endeavors in a foreign
country (i.e. seminars, performances, summer-study programs,
semester abroad, etc.).
John
M. Anderson Visiting Professor in the Visual Arts
Established by Professor Emeritus John M. Anderson
to supplement departmental support for outstanding University
faculty in the College of Arts and Architecture in order to
provide a holder of the professorship in the Penn State School of the
Visual Arts with the resources necessary to continue and further
the scholar’s contributions to teaching, research, and
public service.
Kara
D. Berggman Award
Established by Grayce Berggman to honor her daughter,
Kara D. Berggman, and to recognize the most outstanding piece
of artwork in the undergraduate student art exhibition at
The Pennsylvania State University.
Leslie
P. Greenhill Photography Award
Established in memory of the late Leslie Greenhill,
retired senior professor of education at Penn State, by his
daughter Gillian Greenhill Hannum (’81 M.A. and ’86
Ph.D. Art History), family and friends to recognize a third-year
student enrolled in intermediate or advanced photography courses
who has exhibited a serious involvement in and commitment
to photography.
Margaret
Giffen Schoenfelder Memorial Scholarship
Presented in memory of the late Margaret Giffen Shoenfelder
(’38 B.S. Arch.), a graduate of architecture at Penn
State and a watercolorist throughout her life, to recognize
an exceptional fourth-year student studying painting.
Simeon
and Elizabeth Gallu Scholarship
The late Sam Gallu (’40 B.S. Arts and Letters)
established this scholarship in memory of his parents, Simeon
and Elizabeth Gallu. Sam became a writer and producer for
television, radio, and a playwright whose credits include
Give ‘Em Hell Harry. Consideration will be given to
incoming first-year students possessing outstanding and exceptional
talent, dedication to their goal of a professional musical,
theatrical, or artistic career, and display total dedication
to this goal.
William J. and Lois Kesterson Leight Scholarship
Given in memory of Lois Kesterson Leight by her husband,
William J. Leight, to recognize an undergraduate art major
with demonstrated artistic ability as an art major. This is
awarded in even numbered years.
