Percussion Ensemble 1 and Mallet Ensemble Present Joint Concert

The Penn State Percussion Ensemble 1 and the Penn State Mallet Ensemble, under the direction of Prof. Dan C. Armstrong, will present a combined concert in Esber Recital Hall on Monday, February 21, at 8:00 p.m. Percussion Ensemble 1 will perform works for large percussion ensemble by Combs and Glassock. In addition, Rick Willis, Graduate Teaching Assistant in Percussion, will lead the group in a session of Creative Music Making, which is directed improvisation creating new music on the spot. The group will close their portion of the concert with a performance of Portico for Percussion Orchestra by Boston Symphony Orchestra percussionist Tom Gauger.

The Mallet Ensemble will feature two xylophone soloists with marimba accompaniment. Nate Reed, sophomore in music education, will perform Chromatic Fox Trot by G.H. Green. Henry Sobieski, graduate student in percussion performance, will present a tribute to early spring in Ragtime Robin, also by Green. The Mallet Ensemble will also perform Bethena's Waltz by Scott Joplin, and Equali VI, a work by Daniel Kessner which was written for a 50-piece marimba orchestra. The concert is free and open to the public.
