Center for the Performing Arts Celebrates Penn State's Birthday with Jazz and Cake
February 15, 2005
When jazz legends-in-the making Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove join talents at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Eisenhower Auditorium, their concert will include a birthday celebration for a university 150 years in the making.
The Grammy Award winners–collectively known as Directions in Music–are scheduled to perform works by modern masters of jazz plus a unique rendition of "Happy Birthday to U." The concert date coincides with the anniversary of Penn State's founding in 1855.
No birthday party would be complete without cake. Patrons attending the Directions in Music concert are invited after the performance to the Eisenhower main lobby to enjoy a cake decorated with the Penn State Sesquicentennial logo and blue-and-white-frosted cupcakes.
Among them, Hancock, Brecker and Hargrove have garnered more than 20 Grammys. On Feb. 13, Hancock earned his most recent Grammy, his ninth, for best jazz instrumental solo.
Tickets for the concert are on sale now at $35 for an adult; $22 for a full-time University Park student; and $28 for a person 18 and younger.
