Edward Stone to Speak about the Evolution of Landscape Architecture

Edward D. Stone, Jr., 2004-05 Bracken Fellow and chairman and founder of EDSA, a landscape architectural, urban design and graphic design firm, will give a lecture, “The Evolution of Landscape Architecture at EDSA over 40 Years and Into the Future,” at 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 22, in 101 Thomas Building on the University Park campus. The lecture, part of the John R. Bracken Lecture Series, sponsored by the College of Arts and Architecture's Department of Landscape Architecture, is free to the public.
Stone is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and recipient of the 1994 ASLA Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the society. The medal recognizes Stone as a major force in the profession of landscape architecture, acknowledging his contributions and dedication to the advancement of the profession.
Throughout 44 years of professional practice, Stone and his firm have developed recognized expertise in planning and design for resort and community development. In Europe, Stone has been involved with major projects for Disney, Four Seasons, St. Joe, Tejon Ranch and others.
He is a graduate of Yale University with a degree in architectural design, and Harvard University Graduate School of Design with a degree in landscape architecture. Following service as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, Stone began his professional career in 1959 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In 1960, he founded Edward D. Stone, Jr. and Associates and under his leadership, EDSA continues to grow as one of the leading planning and landscape architectural practices in the United States.
By appointment by Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Carter, Stone served three consecutive four-year terms on the Commission of Fine Arts in Washington, D.C. He has also served as consultant to the Committee for a More Beautiful Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the Governor's Conference on Environmental Quality in the State of Florida.
A recognized authority on resort and tourism planning and leisure community planning, Stone lectures widely to international audiences, including Urban Land Institute, INTA (International Trademark Association), AIA (American Institute of Architechts) and APA (American Planning Association).
