Saxfest Features Internationally Recognized Artists

Students at the School of Music have the unique opportunity to listen and work with internationally recognized saxaphonists. During February 13 and 14, the School of Music will be hosting Saxfest, which will include a faculty recital by Penn State saxophone professor David Stambler, world-renowned saxophonist and teacher Jean-Marie Londeix, special guest artist William Street, saxophone, and Roger Admiral, piano.
The events will begin on Sunday, February 13 at 8:15 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall with David Stambler performing works by Lennon, Bocom, Weiser, and Bartok. He will be accompanied by Kim Lewis, piano, Rachel Franklin, piano, Amy Beth Homan, violin, and Drew Menzies, bass. Mr. Stambler has established himself as a dynamic and active performer throughout the United States, performing both jazz and classical music. His concert activities include recitals and appearances as a symphonic soloist, as well as "on-call" engagements as saxophonist with many orchestras including the Baltimore Symphony, the Annapolis Symphony, the Bay Atlantic Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, the National Gallery Orchestra, and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. He has performed internationally including Japan, the former Soviet Union, and Bermuda.
On Monday, February 14, the day will start at 1:00 p.m. with a lecture by Jean-Marie Londeix entitled The History of the Saxophone in Eisenhower Chapel. At 5:00 p.m Mr. Londeix will give a master class in Eisenhower Chapel. William Street will conclude the day at 8:00 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall with a saxophone recital, accompanied by Roger Admiral, piano. Jean-Marie Londeix is "considered without question as one of the world's greatest saxophonists and professors of saxophone, his influence has been strongly felt in the international community of wind music." (Gerald Danovitch). Jean-Marie Londeix has become known and appreciated as a concert artist, teacher, lecturer and author of numerous pedagogical works. He has performed more than 600 times as a concert soloist appearing in cities around the world, many times inaugurating the first saxophone concerts and recitals in many of the world's concert halls. Approximately one hundred of the most important works for saxophone have been written for and dedicated to him. More than 130 foreign students have traveled from around the globe to study with him at the Bordeaux Conservatory of Music, among them 47 Americans.
William Street is the winner of many awards including the Certificat d'Aptitude de Saxophone, France's highest recognition of excellence in music performance and pedagogy, William Street has earned worldwide respect as one of North America's finest instrumentalists. He holds degrees from Northwestern University, the Conservatoire National de Bordeaux, France and the Catholic University of America. Dr. Street, a member of the Bro-Street Duo and former member of the Ensemble International de Saxophones de Bordeaux, was also a member of the Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Frederick Hemke Saxophone Quartets prior to joining the University of Alberta Department of Music in 1988, where he teaches as saxophone instructor, chamber music coach and Director of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
