Music Graduate Student Recognized for Composing and Conducting Skills

January 18, 2005

A composition by Christian Baldini, graduate student in conducting, was one of four selected to be performed at the Third Seoul International Competition for Composers on March 23, 2005. Baldini’s score was chosen out of 90 entries submitted from 27 different countries. The Ensemble Chronophonie from Germany will perform the four selected compositions at the Kumho Art Hall, after which the jury, including world-known composers Jonathan Harvey (United Kingdom) and Nicolas Huber (Germany), will announce the first prize winner. As one of the finalists, Baldini will also give a 20-minute colloquium explaining his piece.

The Seoul International Competition for Composers, sponsored by the Korean Society of 21st Century Music, is a creative global music competition for composers of all ages. The colloquiums given by the finalists are intended to provide an opportunity for audience members to heighten their interest in and understanding of contemporary music.

Baldini was also recently selected to participate in an audition-competition to obtain a Junior Fellowship at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. Those selected as Junior Fellows serve as assistant conductor to Mark Elder, international chair in conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music and director of the Hallé Orchestra, Britain’s oldest symphony orchestra.
