Essence of Joy Performs in Los Angeles

Essence of Joy performed by invitation at the American Choral Directors' Association National Convention in Los Angeles February 2-5, 2005. Essence of Joy is one of twelve choirs in Penn State's School of Music. Organized in 1991, Essence of Joy performs sacred and secular music from the African American traditions. The choir includes undergraduate and graduate students from many academic and musical programs at Penn State. Essence of Joy has performed throughout Pennsylvania as well as New York City, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and many other states. The choir has released three CDs—The Soul and Spirit of Essence (1998), Essence: Live (2000), and most recently Lift Every Voice and Sing (2002).
