Chinese Artist to Speak at the Palmer Museum

Wenda Gu, a Chinese artist living in New York, will give a public lecture at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art.
Gu is one of the most high-profile members of the Chinese diaspora. Since 1981, he has participated in numerous solo and international group exhibitions all over the world. His art has also been widely discussed and reviewed by important international newspapers and journals such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Village Voice and the South China Morning Post. His art has appeared in Art in America, Flash Art International, Asian Art News and Art + Text, among other publications. In addition, his work has been featured in books including Marilyn Stokstad’s Art History, 2nd edition; Visual Art in the Twentieth Century by Abrams in New York; Tradition and Innovation—Twentieth Century China by University of California Press; Tradition and Change—Contemporary Art of Asia and the Pacific by University of Queensland Press in Australia; and Contemporary Art History of China by Shanghai People’s Republic Press. Gu’s art was included in the 1997 film Under Wraps, which was selected for the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival in New York, and was nominated for an award for Best Cultural Document Film in the Toronto International Film Festival. He was one of more than 40 artists profiled in National Public Television’s series Art in the Twenty-First Century. Since 1993, he has been at work on a project sponsored by the United Nations, for which he has erected a series of human hair installations in more than 20 countries.
