Symphonic Wind Ensemble Tours Italy

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform a concert on Monday, March 14 at 8:00 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall. The program will feature the music of American composers, including Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein, William Schuman's Chester, Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli, Zion by Dan Welcher, Shortcut Home by Dana Wilson and H. Robert Reynolds' transcription of Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mystrerium.
The Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform the opening concert of the 2005 Flicorno D'Oro International Band Competition in Riva del Garda, Italy. The Flicorno D'Oro is an international competition/festival that attracts thousands of musicians from around the world. Along with festivals in Kerkrade, The Netherlands and Valencia, Spain, it is one of the most established and prestigious symphonic band events in Europe. Past members of the jury panel have included such internationally renowned composers and conductors as Johan de Meij, Jan van der Roost, Timothy Reinish, Philip Spark, James Curnow, Joseph Horowitz and Ito Yasuhide. The Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the first American band to be honored with an invitation to open this important event.
While in Italy, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will also perform concerts in the Donizetti Theater in Bergamo, one of Italy's most celebrated concert halls, and in Arco. The students will also spend a day sightseeing in Venice, visiting many of the city's cultural and historic sites, including the famous Cathedral San Marco. The concert on Monday, March 14 is the home/send-off concert before the ensemble leaves for Italy. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students.
