Noted Art Educator to Give Lecture, Participate in Informal Discussion

November 2, 2005

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — Graeme Sullivan, chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities and associate professor of art education in the Teachers College, Columbia University, will give a lecture, “Research Acts in the Visual Arts,” at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art. Also on November 4, there will be an informal discussion with Sullivan from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Zoller Gallery. Refreshments will be served. Both events are free to the public and sponsored by the Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.

Sullivan’s lecture will draw on his recent book, Art Practice as Research, and other sources from contemporary art and art education, to explore the argument that studio-based practices in the visual arts can be a creative and critical form of research and a robust means of scholarly inquiry.

Since the early 1990s, Sullivan’s research has involved an ongoing investigation of creative and critical-reflexive thinking processes and research practices in the visual arts. He has published widely in the field of art education and in 1990 the National Art Education Association (NAEA) awarded him the Manual Barkan Memorial Award for his scholarly writing. Sullivan maintains an active art practice and his Streetworks continue to be created and installed in different cities and sites (see www.streetworksart.com)
