October 3 , 2005
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — Penn State School of Music faculty member Michael Broyles’ latest book, Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Music, has been named one of Choice Magazine’s Outstanding Academic Titles for 2005. Over 23,000 books in all areas of scholarship were submitted to Choice for review, and less than 3 percent were chosen for this prize. Of works published in the last two years, Broyles’ book is among only 13 chosen in the field of music. The Choice review called Mavericks a “superb book” and a “rich book, which should generate much discussion.” This is the second time Broyles has won this honor. His “Music of the Highest Class”: Elitism and Populism in American Music, also published by Yale University Press, received a Choice award in 1993.
