Opera Intermezzo to be Performed by Penn State Opera Theater
October 27, 2005
The Penn State Opera Theater, directed by Susan Boardman, will present Opera Intermezzo: an evening of favorite opera scenes on November 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I on Penn State's University Park campus. Featured this year will be two scenes from Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke, based on the play by Tennessee Williams. The work is about Alma, a woman who longs for freedom, but is responsible for the care of her aging parents. She must also face missed opportunities to come together with her next-door neighbor, John. Opera Theater is pleased to announce the opera debut of Helen Manfull, Emerita Professor of Theater, who will perform the role of Alma's mother. Other scenes will include Thomas' delightful French opera Mignon, Menotti's classic The Medium, and Mozart's beloved Marriage of Figaro. Tickets are $4 for general admission and may be purchased at the door. For further information, please contact Melissa Chavez at 814-865-2487.
