Six-time Tony® winner Thoroughly Modern Millie at Eisenhower Sept. 27 and 28

September 20, 2005

Thoroughly Modern Millie-winner of six 2002 Tony® Awards, including best musical-takes audiences back to the Jazz Age of the 1920s. Pulsing with romance and razzamatazz, the touring Broadway production comes to Penn State's University Park campus for two performances-Sept. 27 and 28-at Eisenhower Auditorium.

Section one and two tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $45 and $39 for an adult; $33 and $27 for a University Park student; and $40 and $34 for a person 18 and younger. For tickets and information, visit www.cpa.psu.edu or phone 863-0255. Outside the local calling area, dial 1-800-ARTS-TIX. Tickets are also available at Eisenhower Auditorium, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; Penn State Tickets Downtown, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; HUB-Robeson Center Information Desk, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays; and Bryce Jordan Center, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

A song-and-dance spectacular, Thoroughly Modern Millie is the story of a Midwestern gal who arrives in New York City determined to search for a new life, including a 'modern marriage.' The show is based on a 1967 Oscar-winning film of the same title. Jeanie Tesori (music) and Dick Scanlan (lyrics) prepared nine new songs, which are accompanied by two from the film and four standards from the 1920s.

An independent and fun-loving flapper, Millie captivates audiences with her enthusiasm and innocence amid the era of Prohibition and speakeasies. She embraces her change in location with bobbed hair, raised hemlines and a new place in the workforce. Taking on the challenges of life as a single woman, Millie encounters fellow flappers, handsome leading men and a villainess that audiences love to hate.

"The next time you hear someone complain that they don‚t make musicals like they used to," writes an Atlanta Journal-Constitution critic, "mention Thoroughly Modern Millie. It‚s the best of yesterday and today. Millie revives the magic of the musical."

This singing, dancing and romancing musical comedy-packed with flapper-invented expressions that have become popular embellishments to our language-is the cat‚s meow.

M&T Bank sponsors the performance. WTAJ-TV10 is the media partner, while 95.3 3WZ is the media sponsor. Artistic Viewpoints, sponsored by the Center for the Performing Arts Community Advisory Council, provides insight from a visiting artist or local expert and is offered free to interested ticket holders in the Eisenhower Auditorium Conference Room one hour before each performance.
