M.F.A. Candidate in the Penn State School of Visual Arts Awarded Fulbright Scholarship

April 24, 2006

Brian Molanphy, a M.F.A. candidate in the Penn State School of Visual Arts, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study ceramics in France.  His proposal is to study French porcelain manufacture in Sèvres and Limoges through an apprenticeship. Ceramics producers in Sèvres and Limoges have absorbed Asian ceramics traditions while maintaining their own highly refined stylistic identities. Molanphy will study and make objects for the table, specifically the cup.  Penn State faculty and staff who supported him in his application include Liz Quackenbush, Sarah Rich, Chris Staley, Rosalie Bailey, Guna Nadarajan, Ed Williams, Tineke Cunning, Deb King, Peter Aeschbacher plus David Mason of Colorado College.

As an undergraduate and instructor at Colorado College, Molanphy made books and paper, which serve as vessels for words. From paper pulp he moved to bread dough and pastry cream and then to tableware. He enrolled in the Penn State ceramics M.F.A. program in September 2004 and will graduate in May 2006.
