Enjoy an Afternoon of Rib-Tickling Fun with Dallas Children's Theater in The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales

March 16, 2006

Once upon a time and happily ever after are twisted and turned when Dallas Children's Theater brings The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales to Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26. Stories like the "Really Ugly Ducking" and "Jack and his Bean Problem" tickle the funny bone when these fairy tales come to musical life.

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales stretches the imagination of young and old alike, as they experience their favorite fairy tales from a different perspective. The show is based on a Caldecott Award-winning book written by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith. Scieszka has received countless honors for his children‚s books, which are known to some as "fractured fairy tales."

Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are on sale now at $14 for an adult, $10 for a University Park student and $10 for a person 18 and younger. For tickets and information, visit www.cpa.psu.edu or phone (814) 863-0255. Outside the local calling area, dial 1-800-ARTS-TIX. Tickets are also available at Eisenhower Auditorium, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; Penn State Tickets Downtown, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; HUB Robeson Center Information Desk, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays; and Bryce Jordan Center, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The play has seven actors playing more than two dozen roles. Kent Stephens adapted the play from Scieszka's popular book. Gary Rue composed the music, while Nancy Schaeffer directed and choreographed this fanciful production.

Dallas Children's Theater was founded in 1984. The company's professional family theater is the largest in the Southwest and has done extensive work with Dallas-area schools. Its arts-in-education project brings artists and educators together in the classroom with music, dance, drama and art integrated into grade-level curriculum.

"The Dallas Children's Theater is a well-crafted touring production," writes a Los Angeles Times critic. The Dallas Morning News adds, "Fresh insight and warmly scripted characters."

McQuaide Blasko Attorneys at Law sponsors the performance. Free audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket holders.

A child-oriented, fairy-tale-themed Artistic Viewpoints, sponsored by the Center for the Performing Arts Community Advisory Council and free to ticket holders, takes place in the Eisenhower Auditorium Conference Room one hour before the show. The event includes games, snacks and activities such as "build a beanstalk," "pin the lips on the frog" and a golden egg hunt.
