College Marshal

Amanda Horn, daughter of Susan and David Horn of New Freedom, Pa., has been named the spring 2006 student marshal for the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture.  The title of marshal is awarded to the student who has earned the highest overall grade-point average in the college.  Horn will earn a bachelor of music with honors in piano performance and a master of arts in music theory.

A Schreyer Honors College scholar, Horn served as a graduate teaching assistant in music in 2005-06. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Societies, and has been awarded the Evan Pugh Award for Academic Excellence and the School of Music Jury Recognition Award.  She has taught private piano lessons since January 2005 and previously taught private violin lessons. Horn plans to continue her graduate education in piano performance.

Department of Architecture

Kristen Zeiber, daughter of Leanne and William Zeiber of Fleetwood, Pa., has been named the spring 2006 student marshal for the Penn State Department of Architecture.  The title of marshal is awarded to the student who has earned the highest overall grade-point average in his or her academic unit.  Zeiber will earn a bachelor of architecture degree.

A Schreyer Honors College scholar, Zeiber has studied architecture abroad in Italy, Japan, Germany and Panama. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and has been on the Dean’s List for nine semesters. She has received the Fifth and Fourth Year Design Excellence Award from the Department of Architecture, American Institute of Architects Scholarship and the J. Henry and Minnie Hitz Memorial Scholarship and was the winner of the Foreman Architects Engineers Scholarship competition.  She will be interning at Yestertomorrow Design-Build School in Vermont this summer.

Department of Integrative Arts

Kelin Spina, daughter of Frank Spina and Dr. Deborah Brennan of Media, is one of two spring 2006 student marshals for the Penn State Department of Integrative Arts. The title of marshal is awarded to the student or students who have earned the highest overall grade-point average in their academic unit. Spina will earn a bachelor of arts degree in integrative arts.

A Schreyer Honors College Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa, Spina has been on the Dean’s List every semester at Penn State and received the President’s Freshman Award for achieving a 4.0 grade-point average. She received a Schreyer Travel Ambassador’s Grant and Schreyer Honors Thesis Grant for her thesis, “Atlas de Paris et del Région Parisienne” (Atlas of Paris and of the Paris Region). Spina studied in Rome during the spring 2006 semester and participated in the French “Link with France” program in 2002–03. She has been involved in the Penn State Sailing Club and served as secretary in 2003–04.

Spina plans to pursue a career with a community art center or museum.

Tonya Yerty, daughter of Lee Yerty of Roaring Spring and Pauline Ceprish of Howard, is one of two spring 2006 student marshals for the Penn State Department of Integrative Arts. The title of marshal is awarded to the student or students who have earned the highest overall grade-point average in their academic unit. Yerty will earn a bachelor of arts degree in integrative arts (focus on advertising and graphic design) and a minor in art history.

Yerty has been on the Dean’s List every semester at Penn State and received the President’s Freshman Award for achieving a 4.0 grade-point average. Since September 2003, she has worked as a graphic designer for Penn State football and basketball marketing and communications, where she designs ads, brochures, t-shirts and other marketing materials. Yerty is involved in Phroth, Penn State’s student humor magazine (alumni relations chair and production staff) and the Student Red Cross Club (Web design officer).

Yerty plans to pursue a career in graphic design in the advertising or marketing fields.

Department of Landscape Architecture

Shannon Lint, daughter of Carole and Morris Lint of Tiffin, Ohio, has been named the spring 2006 student marshal for the Penn State Department of Landscape Architecture. The title of marshal is awarded to the student who has earned the highest overall grade-point average in his or her academic unit. Lint will earn a bachelor of landscape architecture degree.

Lint was recently named recipient of a 2006 American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) National Award of Merit. She has also received several awards and scholarships at Penn State, including the Penn State Study Abroad Award, Humphrey Repton Creative Writing Award and Samuel T. Atherholt Scholarship from the District V Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. She has been on the Dean’s List for nine out of ten semesters and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Lint is also a student member of ASLA and has been involved in Alpha Rho Chi, the national professional fraternity for architecture and allied arts (served as secretary), the Landscape Architecture Student Society and the Penn State Dance Marathon.

Lint, who has traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Europe, will be working in the design studio at engineering firm WilsonMiller in Naples, Fla., beginning June 2006.

School of Music

Janelle Zook, daughter of Ron and Judy Zook of New Holland, has been named the spring 2006 student marshal for the Penn State School of Music. The title of marshal is awarded to the student who has earned the highest overall grade-point average in his or her academic unit. Zook will earn a bachelor of science degree in music education.

Zook, a Schreyer Honors College Scholar, spent summer 2005 in Hungary, where she served as an ESL instructor, conducted studies for her honors thesis, “Popular Songs in the Hungarian ESL Classroom: Effect on Student Pronunciation and Affective Response,” and attended the Crescendo Summer Institute of the Arts. She received grants from the Schreyer Honors College, School of Music and College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State to support her research. In addition to being on the Dean’s List every semester, Zook’s honors include a Penn State Performer’s Certificate in oboe (December 2005), Penn State Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition winner (oboe, October 2003) and the Penn State John W. Oswald Award, which recognizes graduating seniors university-wide who have exhibited outstanding leadership.

While at Penn State, Zook was involved in Christian Fellowship and the Penn State chapter of the Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association and taught private oboe lessons. She plans to teach instrumental, choral and/or general music in the Lancaster area next fall.

School of Theatre

Erin Lapham, daughter of Cheryl and Warren Lapham of Henniker, N.H., has been named the spring 2006 student marshal for the Penn State School of Theatre. The title of marshal is awarded to the student who has earned the highest overall grade-point average in his or her academic unit. Lapham will earn a bachelor of fine arts degree in theatre production.

Lapham has served as lighting designer for 11 productions at Penn State, the Bates Dance Festival in Maine and the Gene Frankel Theatre in New York, in addition to working on numerous other productions as associate or assistant lighting designer and as master electrician. She has been on the Dean’s List for six semesters and won the College of Arts and Architecture Golumbic Scholarship for Design Achievement in 2005. Lapham, who is also a dancer, has been involved in the Penn State Ballroom Dance Competition Team and the Penn State chapter of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. She plans to pursue a career as a freelance lighting designer in New York City.

School of Visual Arts

Suzanne Wittman, daughter of Marcia and Michael Wittman of Centre Hall, Pa., has been named the spring 2006 student marshal for the Penn State School of Visual Arts.  The title of marshal is awarded to the student who has earned the highest overall grade-point average in his or her academic unit.  Wittman will earn a bachelor of fine arts in art and a bachelor of science in art education.

A Schreyer Honors College scholar, Wittman completed her honors thesis with a solo exhibition, “[MY]opia,” held at the Solstice Gallery in Millheim. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. In addition, she has received an Outstanding Student Teacher Award, Alice Schwartz-Mattil Award for Art Education and the Bruce Shobaken Honorary Endowed Award in Printmaking. After graduation, Wittman will move to Bellingham, Wash. to work as the community and educational outreach coordinator at Bison Bookbinding.
