Soprano Jennifer Trost to Hold Faculty Recital

Jennifer Trost, soprano, will present a faculty recital on Friday, November 3, 2006 at 8:00 pm in Esber Recital Hall with Arlene Shrut, piano. This program will also serve as the Artist Recital for the 2006 conference of the Allegheny Mountain Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. The progam will feature the Wesendonck Lieder of Richard Wagner, Lieder der Mignon of Robert Schumann, and songs by contemporary American composer, Ben Moore.

Jennifer Trost joined the Penn State School of Music voice faculty in 2005. She earned a BA in music education at Albion College, a MM in voice at Michigan State University, and took doctoral courses at the University of Southern California. Prior to coming to Penn State, Professor Trost taught studio voice at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, Germany followed by a year as a visiting associate professor of voice and acting head of the voice area at the University of California in Santa Barbara.

Trost is a young-dramatic soprano and is still active as an opera singer. Her first professional engagement was as a resident artist at the Los Angeles Opera. Since 1991, her career has been based in Germany. During her thirteen years as a resident of Germany, she was a soloist in Wuppertal and at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. She was privileged to work regularly with well-known conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch, James Levine, and especially Zubin Mehta, the General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera. She sang as a guest artist at the Komische Oper in Berlin, the National Theater in Mannheim, the Salzburg Music Festival, the Opera de Paris Garnier, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy, the British Broadcasting Corporation (Proms) in London, the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, the Munich Radio Orchestra, and the Munich Philharmonic. Trost sang the role of Magdalena (a role specifically composed for her) in the world-premiere of Aribert Reimannâ's "Bernarda Albas Haus."

Trost is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Recently she served as a consultant on the translation (from German to English) of the book: "Beruf: Opernsanger â*„ ein Ratgeber" by Marita Knobel and Brigitte Steinert, published by Barenreiter-Verlag Karl Votterle GmbH & Co. KG Kassel (2002).

Arlene Shrut is Founder and Artistic Director of New Triad for Collaborative Arts. A member of the vocal arts faculty at The Juilliard School, she teaches singer-pianist recital partners at Manhattan School of Music. She is an admired keyboard performer and has collaborated with such artists as Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson. Shrut has recorded for the Dorian, Centaur, Orion, Summit and Albany Records labels, and her credits include "Songs of Hugo Wolf"(with Daniel Lichti on Dorian), which received a Canadian Grammy nomination. She has been featured in many radio broadcasts including programs from the CBC, Berlin Radio and WNCR in New York, and has performed at Weill (Carnegie) Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The 92nd Street Y, The National Gallery, The Phillips Collection and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. She has toured extensively in Europe, Canada and across the United States.

In addition to New Triad, Arlene founded the National Association of Accompanists and Coaches, co-founded the Seal Bay Music Festival, and personally authored an entire series of multimedia scripts under the name of Classical Concepts. She has served on the faculties of Syracuse University, Mannes College of Music and The Aspen Music Festival. In addition to vocal coaching at Juilliard, she currently teaches singer/pianist recital partners at Manhattan School of Music.

Arlene Shrut holds two piano degrees from the Eastman School of Music and a Doctorate in Accompanying from the University of Southern California. In 1981, she received a Fulbright Grant to Germany, and she has mentored with the most distinguished teachers of her time.
