Professor of Historical Musicology Michael Beckerman to Lecture on Politics and Art

Michael Beckerman will present a lecture in the Music History/Theory Colloquium Series on Friday, December 1, 4:00 p.m., titled "When Politics Transforms Art: From Bloodless Coups to Concentration Camps." Beckerman is a professor of historical musicology and chair of the department of music at New York University. A specialist in East European music, he has published multiple books on Dvorák and Janácek, as well as articles and papers on topics as wide as nationalism, gypsies, and film music. He also writes regularly for the New York Times. He has received numerous awards, including the Czech Parliament Order of Merit, an ASCAP Deems Taylor award for his book New Worlds of Dvorák, Laureate of the Czech Music Council, and the Janácek Medal from the Czech Ministry of Culture. The lecture will be in Music Building I, Room 117.
