Architecture Student Projects Exhibited in Old Main

November 24, 2006

Five second-year architecture student projects related to Penn State’s entry in the 2007 Solar Decathlon are currently on display in the Office of Undergraduate Education, 417 Old Main, on the Penn State University Park campus through December 18. The projects, collectively titled Under One Sun: Penn State MorningStar Home, were part of a seven-week design challenge assigned to students as part of the architecture studio curriculum. Architecture faculty members Reggie Aviles, Lisa Iulo, Loukas Kalisperis and Ute Poerschke advised the 65 students involved in the project.

For their project, the second-year students assisted the Penn State Solar Decathletes by designing the site plan and interior of the MorningStar Home, Penn State’s submission for the 2007 Solar Decathlon. Designs proposed by the second-year students continue to be developed by architecture, landscape architecture and engineering students.

A Penn State team was selected from top universities around the world to take part in the 2007 Solar Decathlon and will design, construct and operate a solar-powered home to be displayed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in September 2007. The Solar Decathlon is an invaluable opportunity for architecture students to participate in a hands-on learning experience working in collaboration with students in many other disciplines, including architectural engineering, engineering and communications, as well as experts from research institutes throughout the University and from other relevant fields.
