Center for the Performing Arts PreViews Debuts as Monthly Online Magazine and Wins International Design Award

September 28, 2006

PreViews, the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State's award-winning quarterly newsletter, is now an online magazine that will be published monthly (except for a combined December-January issue) during the fall through spring season. PreViews October 2006 is online now at www.cpa.psu.edu.

The first online issue features articles about seven October presentations at Eisenhower and Schwab auditoriums, plus a special recognition related to the 50th anniversary of the former Artists Series. It also includes three podcasts that people can listen to on the site or download to check out later on a personal computer or MP3 player.

One of the podcasts features an interview with Grammy-nominated sitarist Anoushka Shankar, who performs with her East-meets-West band on October 24 at Eisenhower. The other podcasts include music performed by the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, appearing October 17 at Schwab, and Kirov Orchestra with piano soloist Alexander Toradze, on stage at Eisenhower on October 26.

"By making PreViews an online publication, we hope to reach a wider audience in a more timely fashion," says Laura Sullivan, Center for the Performing Arts director of marketing and communications. "It will still offer in-depth coverage of future events, but in a way that's more user-friendly for the twenty-first century. And as a bonus, we'll be saving natural resources and money by not printing the piece on paper."

PreViews readers will still have the option, however, of printing articles from each issue in a printer-friendly format.

PreViews recently earned the University and College Designers Association (UCDA) 2006 Award of Excellence in the tabloid category. The publication, designed by Urszula Kulakowski and written/edited by John Rafacz, was one of 143 award winners in dozens of categories chosen from among 1,600 entries. PreViews was on display Sept. 16 to 19 in a winners exhibition at UCDA's 36th annual design conference in Austin, Texas.

UCDA, which promotes excellence in visual communication for institutions of higher education, has thousands of members from throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East. The members–including graphic designers, art directors, undergraduate and graduate design students, visual communications educators, photographers and writers–meet regularly to discuss similar goals and challenges. UCDA sponsors numerous professional development programs for members and others throughout North America.
