Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio Celebrates 30 Years on the World Stage

September 28, 2006

The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, this year celebrating its 30th season of gracing the world's most famous recital stages, performs compositions by Mozart, Brahms and Schoenberg at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Schwab Auditorium on the Penn State University Park campus.

Pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson, who made their debut as a trio at President Carter's inauguration in January 1977, combine technical mastery, expressive depth, performance experience and personal charm. The ensemble's longevity and inclusion of three internationally acclaimed soloists make it a rarity among even the chamber music elite.

Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are on sale at $26 for an adult, $10 for a University Park student, and $19 for a person 18 and younger. For tickets and information, visit www.cpa.psu.edu or phone (814) 863-0255. Outside the local calling area, dial 1-800-ARTS-TIX. Tickets are also available at Eisenhower Auditorium and Bryce Jordan Center, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; Penn State Tickets Downtown, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and HUB-Robeson Center, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays.

"There is no finer piano trio than Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson," writes a critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. "One phrase from the cello of Sharon Robinson could right most wrongs," observes a critic for The Oregonian of Portland. "The tone of Jamie Laredo's violin could sweeten any hurt. And the power of Joseph Kalichstein's piano could move any obstacle. Put them together as the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, and brilliant playing is the result."

The trio's scheduled program includes Mozart's Piano Trio in B-flat Major, K. 502; Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht, Op. 4; and Brahms‚ Trio in B Major, Op. 8.

"There can be few chamber groups whose members are so evenly and expertly matched, who can convey the sheer pleasure of making music so spontaneously," notes a Chicago Tribune reviewer. "Individually and collectively, these musicians are special."

Highlights of the trio's anniversary season include a performance at New York City's Carnegie Hall with guest violinist Pinchas Zuckerman and the world premiere of a piano quartet written for them by Richard Danielpour.

The trio last performed at Schwab in April 2002–the same year Musical America named the threesome ensemble of the year–in a concert with the Emerson String Quartet.

GN Associates sponsors the Oct. 17 concert. WPSU is the media sponsor. Artistic Viewpoints, an informal moderated discussion that provides insight from pianist Joseph Kalichstein, is offered in Schwab Auditorium one hour before the performance and is free for ticket holders.
