Pennsylvania Quintet to Present Recital
February 1, 2007
The Pennsylvania Quintet, Penn State's resident wind faculty chamber ensemble, will present a recital Sunday, February 18, at 4 p.m., in Esber Recital Hall. The Quintet will perform Josef Foerster's late-romantic Quintet, Op. 95 (1909), J.S. Bach's chorale prelude "Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland," BWV 659, and American composer Jan Bach's Skizzen, a work inspired by the humorous and earthy line drawings of German illustrator Heinrich Kley (1863-1945). Kley's drawings will be projected during the performance.
The Pennsylvania Quintet is comprised of Penn State faculty members Eleanor Duncan Armstrong (flute), Tim Hurtz (oboe), Smith Toulson (clarinet), Lisa O. Bontrager (horn), and Daryl Durran (bassoon). This acclaimed wind chamber music ensemble will mark its twenty-third season in 2006-2007. The Pennsylvania Quintet has presented concerts at major venues on both sides of the Atlantic. These performances include concerts at the National Gallery of Art's American Music Festival in Washington, D.C., the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Germany, and concerts in Nuremberg and Frankfurt. In addition to performances on many university guest artist series, the Quintet has been Ensemble-in-Residence at the Sedona Chamber Music Festival and a winner of the National Flute Association's international Chamber Music Ensemble competition. The Pennsylvania Quintet can be heard on the compact disc recordings, American Wind Music (Centaur 2085), 20th Century Wind Chamber Music (Centaur 2225), and Recent American Works for Winds (Centaur 2509). In addition, National Public Radio has featured the Quintet in its nationally syndicated program, Performance Today.
