Professor of Music Invited to Speak at Desert Skies Symposium

Joanne Rutkowski, professor of music, has been invited to be the co-opening speaker at the 10th Biennial Desert Skies Symposium on Research on Music Education on February 15-17, 2007 at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Along with Steven Hadden, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kansas, she will present a historical perspective of the symposium, the oldest running symposium in music education in the United States.
Rutkowski, who has taught at Penn State since 1984 and is currently coordinator of music education programs, received a B.M. in music education from Miami University (Ohio) and a M.F.A. and Ph.D. in music education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education with particular emphases in music learning and development, curriculum design, assessment, research, and music for children birth through 12. Currently she provides music experiences for children ages 3-5 at a day care center on the University Park campus and for children ages birth-5 at the State College Music Academy.
She has presented her research at state, regional, national, and international symposia and conferences. She has also written articles for numerous journals and is a member of the Music Educators National Conference (having just completed a 6-year appointment to the national executive board of the Society for Research in Music Education), the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
