February 15, 2007
The March 2007 issue of PreViews, the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State online magazine, is available now. The March issue includes articles plus audio and video podcasts about four presentations–Hairspray (March 2, 3 and 4), Ysaÿe Quartet (March 6), Sydney Dance Company in Grand (March 22) and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell as guest conductor and violin soloist (March 28)–to be performed at Penn State's University Park campus.
The March podcasts include an interview with Sydney Dance Company Artistic Director Graeme Murphy, widely recognized as Australia's greatest choreographer; video excerpts of Murphy's award-winning Grand, an evening-length dance set to live piano music by Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin and other composers; video highlights of the Tony Award-winning musical HAIRSPRAY; and audio samples of music performed by France's Ysaÿe Quartet and classical music superstar Bell.
The February 2007 PreViews, also still online, includes articles about four Center for the Performing Arts presentations–New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (Feb. 17), Montreal's Cirque Éloize in Rain (Feb. 20), South Africa's Soweto Gospel Choir (Feb. 22) and Dublin's The Chieftains (Feb. 27)–scheduled for University Park's Eisenhower Auditorium.
Two of the February podcasts feature artist interviews with New Orleans Jazz Orchestra artistic director and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and The Chieftains founder Paddy Moloney. The Mayfield podcast also includes music samples performed by his big band. Two more podcasts include musical selections from Soweto Gospel Choir's Blessed CD, which this week won a Grammy Award for best traditional world music album, and Irish roots band The Chieftains. The other podcast features video highlights of Rain, a show that blends circus, theater, dance and music in an exploration of childhood memories.
