Bad-hair Day Got You Feeling Blue?
Turn That Frown Upside Down by Saving $10 per Ticket to Tony-Winning Hairspray

March 1, 2007

The Broadway musical comedy hit Hairspray, about a big girl with an even bigger heart, bold dreams and bouffant hair, comes to Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium for five performances this week. And now, in an offer that could redeem even a bad-hair day, everyone can save $10 per ticket on the show that won eight Tony Awards, including best musical. Choose from five performances at 8 p.m. Friday, March 2; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3; and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4.

After subtracting the $10 discount, section one and two tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $45 and $39 for an adult, $35 and $29 for a University Park student and $40 and $34 for a person 18 and younger. To receive the discount, patrons must use the code words AQUA NET. Discounted tickets must be purchased by phone, at (814) 863-0255 or 1-800-ARTS-TIX, or in person at Eisenhower Auditorium and Bryce Jordan Center (8 to 5 weekdays), HUB-Robeson Center (11 to 2 weekdays) and Penn State Tickets Downtown (10 to 6 weekdays and Saturday). Tickets and seating are subject to availability. These special prices are not valid on prior purchases.

Hairspray takes audiences back to 1962 Baltimore, where change is in the air. Tracy Turnblad sets out to dance her way onto The Corny Collins Show, a popular local TV program. Overnight, the 16-year-old is transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a television show without denting her 'do?

The show is piled bouffant-high with laughter and romance–and enough tuneful songs to fill a nonstop platter party. "If life were everything it should be," writes a New York Times reviewer, "it would be more like Hairspray."

Pennsylvania Academy of Cosmetology sponsors the performance. WTAJ-TV 10 and 95.3 3WZ are the media sponsors. Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for the March 3 matinee at no extra charge to ticket holders. Artistic Viewpoints, an informal moderated discussion featuring a visiting artist or local expert, is offered in Eisenhower Auditorium one hour before each performance and is free for ticket holders. Artistic Viewpoints regularly fills to capacity. Seating is available on a first-arrival basis.
