Audio Research Symposium to be Held March 31

March 20, 2007

The inaugural symposium on Sound-Environments-Audio, co-sponsored by the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture and the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, in the Stuckeman Family Building on the Penn State University Park campus. A free concert of new music and digital art, CrossCurrents2, will immediately follow the symposium. The symposium will be free, with lunch and dinner provided.

For more information on the symposium or to register, go to http://www.music.psu.edu/audiosym.html. For more information about the concert CrossCurrents2, go to http://www.music.psu.edu/crosscurrents2/

The Sound-Environments-Audio Symposium is a collaborative research opportunity that brings together Penn State faculty and students interested in the art and science of sound and its role in the environments where we live and work. Some objectives are: to explore ideas for collaborative research among diverse fields within the technical and artistic disciplines; identify funding opportunities; and discuss pedagogical innovation and the development of interdisiciplinary programs.

Examples of topics being presented include sound in virtual environments, data sonification, performance audio, multimedia integration, soundscape architecture, and biomedical applications.

The Stuckeman Family Building, which houses Penn State's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, was completed in 2005. It was designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's national criteria for certification as environmentally friendly, sustainable architecture.
