Music Educator to Discuss Teaching in Diverse Classrooms

Dr. Louis Bergonzi, professor of conducting and music education (strings), and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra at the University of Illinois, will give two public presentations on Tuesday, December 4, at 9:45 a.m. in 110 Music Building I and at 1 p.m. in 214A Music Building I.
The first session, “Band and Orchestra as World Music Ensembles: Understanding Reggae-Sprinkled Twinkle,” is aimed at undergraduates, while the second session, “To See in Living Color and to Hear the Sound of Silence: Preparing Music Teachers to Teach in Diverse Classrooms” is aimed at graduate students.
Prior to his appointment to the University of Illinois faculty in 2005, Bergonzi was on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and other various public school systems in Massachusetts. A frequent presenter at regional, state, national, and international teachers' conferences, Bergonzi's areas of expertise include orchestra rehearsal technique, conducting, and string teaching, particularly in an urban setting. The author of several books and many articles, he has served as president of the American String Teachers Association and national chair for its Urban Outreach Program, in addition to involvement in other music organizations.
