“Underdog” Sculptor to Give Public Lecture

October 5, 2007

Tony Matelli, an internationally renown sculptor from New York, will give a free public lecture at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art. The Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series sponors Matelli’s lecture.

Tony Matelli has always been interested in the underdog. He has become well known for his hyper-real allegorical sculptures, often depicting characters and things just barely getting by, things nearly dead, and things hopelessly lost or otherwise totally unwanted. He investigates the complexity of contemporary culture and calls into question societal mores so often taken for granted.

Born in Chicago in 1971, Matelli moved to New York in 1995. He received his B.F.A. from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and his M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomsfield Hills, Mich. Matelli has exhibited his sculptures in numerous group and solo exhibitions in the United States and Europe.  For more information, go to www.leokoenig.com.
