FIRST THURSDAYS
First Thursday events are open to art lovers of all ages and are held in conjunction with First Thursday State College programs, sponsored by the Downtown State College Improvement District. Join us on the first Thursday of every month to enjoy a film, musical performance, gallery talk, hands-on activity, or other art-related event. Music Performance: "Songs of the Hudson River and the Catskills," by Dave Ruch, folk musician and historian.
Dave Ruch, a professional musician and historian based in Buffalo, New York, sings and plays folk music on an assortment of instruments including mandolin, guitar, washtub bass, dulcimer, five-string banjo, and jaw harp. His interactive presentation introduces contemporary audiences to the songs that nineteenth-century occupants of the rural Hudson River area and the Catskills would have sung and performed. Held in conjunction with American Scenery: Different Views in Hudson River School Painting.

In the spirit of collaboration and exploration, the Palmer Museum of Art opens our gallery spaces to Perspectives Unbound, gallery talks given by Penn State faculty and instructors. See some of your favorite works of art in a new and enlightening light.

You want it, you get it! This semester, the Palmer initiates a series of guided tours featuring works of art that you select. As You Like It will be part of the regular Friday Gallery Talk series and will also be available on home football Saturdays (times to be determined according to kickoff).

A CELEBRATION OF BAROQUE ART AND MUSIC
THE ART OF MUSIC SERIES
The Palmer Museum of Art celebrates the donation of a new baroque painting to its permanent collection, Giovanni Baglione's St. Sebastian Healed by an Angel. In honor of this gift, The Art of Music series will feature baroque music and song performed by faculty and students from Penn State's School of Music.

"Baglione's World: Rome in the Early Seventeenth Century," by Joseph Connors, professor of the history of art and architecture at Harvard University and director of Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Palmer Museum of Art, Penn State's Institute for Arts and Humanities, and the Department of Art History, and is part of the yearlong IAH initiative, "Moments of Change: The Early Seventeenth Century and the Roots of Modernity (ca. 1600-1625)."

"Pairs and Prospects in Hudson River School Landscape Painting' by Franklin Kelly, National Gallery of Art.
Franklin Kelly, senior curator of American and British Paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., will present a lecture titled "Pairs and Prospects in Hudson River School Landscape Painting." Dr. Kelly's lecture complements the exhibition American Scenery: Different Views in American Landscape Painting, on display October 7-December 16, 2007. Dr. Kelly is the author of numerous monographs, catalogues, and articles on nineteenth-century American art, including Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, and American Masters from Bingham to Eakins: The John Wilmerding Collection.
