Fine Art Photographer to Give Public Lecture and Conduct Workshops

September 11, 2007

Cara Judea Alhadeff, an internationally known fine art photographer from New York and San Francisco, will give a free public lecture, “The Beauty of Disorder,” at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 18, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art, on the University Park campus. She will also be conducting a series of workshops on Monday, September 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, September 18, 6:00-9:00 p.m., in 210B Patterson Building, and Wednesday, September 19, 8:00-11:00 a.m. in 115A Wagner Building. Her lecture and workshops are sponsored by the Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.

Alhadeff’s lecture and workshops will focus on the perception of art as a bridge between the mind and body. Using the theatre of the body as grounds for exploring both the familiar and unfamiliar, she will lead participants through a series of “reaction activities.” Her background as a photographer, lyengar yoga teacher, and environmental justice advocate will shape the three-day event.

Alhadeff, a native of Boulder, Colo., has exhibited and won awards internationally for her color photographs. Her first exhibition, in 1993, included c-prints traditionally hung on gallery walls, and installations of found metal and stretched rubber that “housed” her prints, along with a dancer and musician who performed within the frame of her projected slides. Since then, she has combined all three strategies for presenting her work using collaborations with dancers, poets, sculptors, composers and architects. Alhadeff recently exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and her photographs are part of their permanent collection. Currently, her work is on exhibit in galleries and museums in Germany, Portugal, Belgium, France, Korea, San Francisco and New York.

The lecture and workshop are open to the public and free of charge.  Reservations are required for the workshops and can be made by contacting Jaclyn Lee Tufford, jlt314@psu.edu.
