Center for the Performing Arts‚ Eco-friendly PreViews Wins International Design Award
September 18, 2007
PreViews, an online multimedia magazine published monthly in-season by the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State, has earned a silver award in the going green category from the University and College Designers Association (UCDA).
The panel of judges recognized PreViews for being a communications tool that features excellent design but does not use paper, ink and other resources required by a printed publication.
The online magazine, produced by the Center for the Performing Arts Marketing and Communications Department, will be featured Sept. 29 through Oct. 2 in an exhibition at UCDA's 37th annual design conference in Toronto.
The Center for the Performing Arts introduced the online incarnation of PreViews in September 2006. It had previously been a printed quarterly newsletter. The last season of the printed version earned a 2006 UCDA award of excellence in the tabloid category.
Each issue includes in-depth articles about upcoming Center for the Performing Arts presentations. It also features audio and video podcasts that can be listened to or watched on the site or downloaded to check out later on a personal computer or MP3 player.
PreViews September 2007 is online at www.cpa.psu.edu. It includes exclusive interviews with violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, who performs Sept. 27 at Eisenhower Auditorium, and jazz singer Nnenna Freelon, who appears with the Count Basie Orchestra Sept. 29 at Eisenhower. The podcasts also include samples of the artists‚ music.
Laura Sullivan, marketing and communications director, provides voice-overs for the podcasts. Urszula Kulakowski is the art director. Erik Baxter, a multimedia specialist, designs the online publication and edits the podcasts. John Rafacz, who edits and writes PreViews, interviews artists for the podcasts. The creative team travels to Miami in November to present a PreViews case study at the National Arts Marketing Project Conference.
