Potter to Give Public Lecture

February 14, 2008

Ayumi Horie, a potter, will give a free public lecture at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, in 210B Patterson Building. Horie’s lecture is sponsored by the Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.

Horie is a studio potter and ceramic artist who works in the Hudson Valley town of Cottekill, N.Y. She makes functional pottery, mixing Japanese and American folk traditions with contemporary images, for use in kitchens, offices and cars. The pots are distinctly handmade, allowing for idiosyncrasies and imperfections as evidence of human vulnerabilities.

A native of Maine, Horie received her B.A. in 1991 from Mount Holyoke College, B.F.A. in 1996 from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and M.F.A. in 2000 from the University of Washington. She teaches workshops across the country at schools and institutions such as Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Greenwich House Pottery and Archie Bray Foundation, where she has served on the board of directories since 2004.
