New York Sculptor to Give Public Lecture
February 25, 2008
Janine Antoni, a New York performance artist and sculptor, will give a free public lecture at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art, on the University Park campus. Antoni’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities and the Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.
A native of Freeport, Bahamas, Antoni received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, New York, and M.F.A. in 1989 from Rhode Island School of Design. Her work blurs the distinction between performance art and sculpture, transforming everyday activities such as eating, bathing, and sleeping into ways of making art. Antoni’s primary tool for making sculpture is her own body. Antoni has had major exhibitions of her work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, S.I.T.E. Santa Fe, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. The recipient of several prestigious awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1998 and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award in 1999, Antoni currently resides in New York.
