Storyteller to Give Public Lecture

March 27, 2008

ISteve McGuire, a contemporary traditional storyteller who has performed throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada, will give a free public lecture at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art, on the University Park campus. The Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series sponsors McGuire’s lecture.

McGuire, who received his M.A. (sculpture) and Ph.D. (art education) from the University of Iowa, was the recipient of a 1997 Collegiate Teaching Award, the 2000 Iowa Arts Council’s Arts Builds Community Education Award and the 2003 University of Iowa Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service. He collects and tells stories, largely based on his bike trips to places such as Iceland, along the Continental Divide, and across Iowa. McGuire is a professor of art education at the University of Iowa, where he has taught since 1990. He is the program coordinator for art education and president of Seminar for Research in Art Education for the National Art Education Association.
