Theodore Roethke Centenary Celebration: Song Recital, 8:00 PM, November 7, Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I
The School of Music will present a song recital as part of the Theodore Roethke Centenary Celebration. The program will feature settings of Roethke poems by Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, William Bolcom, and the premiere of a song cycle by Professor Emeritus Bruce Trinkley entitled Open House. Performers will include Jennifer Trost (soprano), Mary Saunders Barton (soprano), Richard Kennedy (tenor), Raymond Sage (tenor), Ted Christopher (baritone), Norman Spivey (baritone), and Sue Haug (piano), all members of the faculty of the School of Music. Pianist Ann Deighton will also be performing. Penn State poet Robin Becker will read the Roethke poems during the performance.
Other events in the celebration will include a poetry reading on Thursday, November 6 at 4 p.m. in 302 Pond Lab, which will feature the finalists from a student poetry competition. The program will be introduced by Penn State creative writing faculty member and poet Julia Spicher Kasdorf, who will also read from her own Roethke-inspired poems. On Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Robb Hall of the Hintz Family Alumni Center, distinguished American writer David Wagoner, a student of Roethke’s at Penn State, will give a poetry reading and speak about his experience as Roethke’s student. David Wagoner is the author of seventeen books of poems, most recently Good Morning and Good Night, and ten novels.

The 120th Penn State Glee Club Fall Concert features a great variety of music, from traditional Polynesian songs arranged by Stephen Hatfield to one of the most popular pieces for male voices, the "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl. Other composers featured include Veljo Tormis, David Brunner, Z. Randall Stroope and Bruce Trinkley. The concert includes a performance by the Hi-Lo's and concludes with traditional Penn State fight songs! An event not to be missed -- be sure to arrive early, as this concert will sell out!

The Penn State Flute Studio will host guest artist Cathy Herrera who will present a Participation Workshop: "Introduction to the South American Flute". All students and the public are invited to attend.
Flutist Cathy Collinge Herrera holds a Doctor of Music Performance degree and World Music Certificate from The Florida State University. On both flute and piccolo, Dr. Herrera has performed solo, chamber, and symphonic repertoire throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, England, and Central and South America. A contributor to the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, she has enjoyed extensive studies and performances with her collection of ethnic flutes, the bulk of which are a result of her two-year Fulbright grant to Peru where she was principal flutist with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional and founder of the Festivales Internacionales de Flautistas. Dr. Herrera continues to perform internationally, often under the auspices of the U.S Embassy Cultural Programs. A resident of State College, she perform locally with the Nittany Valley Symphony, Altoona Symphony and Music at Penn's Woods Festival orchestras in addition to the chamber ensembles Camerata Amistad, Allegria Ensemble and From the Heart. She is a rostered artist for the PA Council for the Arts and Galaxy Arts in Education program.

A program of opera scenes featuring American composers marks the Penn State directing debut of Ted Christopher, the new artistic director of Penn State Opera Theatre. Christopher joins musical director Dr. Beverly A. Patton leading 24 freshmen through graduate students in works by Dominick Argento, Douglas Moore, Robert Ward, Gian-Carlo Menotti and Mark Adamo.

The Chamber Singers will perform music by Renaissance masters including Josquin, Pierre de Manchicourt, Victoria, Byrd, Tallis and Peter Philips. The centerpiece of the evening will be the Six Choral Dances from Benjamin Britten's opera "Gloriana," written to commemorate the 1953 Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
