School of Music Discounts The Penn State School of Music announces its fall concert season with a 40 percent off special. Buy your tickets for School of Music concerts at Eisenhower and Schwab auditoriums in advance and save 40 percent. Avoid standing in a long line at the box office, help the School of Music start concerts on time, and save. No limit on the number of tickets available with this discount. Ticket are available at the Eisenhower Box Office [814-863-0255 or 1-800-ARTS-TIX] or online at www.cpa.psu.edu. Prices vary ($8 adult/$4 student for most ensemble concerts; $15 adult/$6 student for Mosaic and opera). The discount is available up to one hour prior to concerts and does not apply to Bandorama.

Penn State Opera Theatre: What's All the Screaming About?, Thursday, October 1, 7:00 p.m., Schlow Library (corner of Beaver Avenue and Allen Street). Directed by Ted Christopher, assistant professor of music and Beveraly Patton, associate professor of music, What's All the Screaming About? is a delightful, entertaining and informative evening of scenes from opera, presented by the students from PSU Opera Theatre. Part of Downtown State College First Thursdays.

Jazz Dimensions Ensembles: Inner, Outer and Center, Thursday, October 1, 8:00 p.m., Esber Recital Hall, Music Bldg I

Guest Artist Duo Recital: Hye Jung Hong and Wei Han Su, piano, Saturday, October 3, 4:00 p.m., Esber Recital Hall, Music Bldg I
Since giving her debut at the Palace of Arts in Seoul, Korea, Hye-Jung Hong has performed in recitals in Germany, Holland, Italy, Malaysia and Canada. In the U.S., she has appeared as concerto soloist with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and has given numerous solo and collaborative concerts. She has performed at the Missouri Music Teachers Association State Convention, and has appeared on concert series in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. In 2004, she appeared as guest artist at the Amadeus Piano Festival in Oklahoma. Performances in the 2008-2009 season included a chamber concert for the Fairfield Chamber Music Society in Iowa, performance on the Odyssey Chamber Music Series in Columbia, Missouri, and a guest recital at the University of Arkansas.

Wei-Han Su was a featured recitalist at the Walnut Hill Summer Music Festival in Boston, Massachusetts in 1999 and 2004. He has made guest appearances at universities and colleges in the U.S., Korea and Malaysia, and has presented recitals on concert series in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with the Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana, Cambridge Chamber Orchestra, and Springfield Symphony Orchestra among others. His compact disc recording of the music of Charles Ives with tenor Andrew Childs was released on the Centaur label in 2006.

Choral Collage, featuring seven Penn State Choirs, Saturday, October 3, 8:00 p.m., Worship Hall, Pasquerilla Spiritual Center
Seven choirs from Penn State will combine to present a concert in the glorious acoustic of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. Each choir will perform two pieces, including music for mixed, men's, and women's choirs from the fifteenth century to the present day. As well as an aural treat, the performers will make full use of the appealing space in the Worship Hall. The concert will conclude with the audience joining over 300 singers to sing the Alma Mater. Come and join the Penn State choirs in this FREE concert as we celebrate Parent's Weekend!

There will be selections from their debut album, Bone Break, as well as a couple of fun covers from Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, etc, and keep in mind that they always have a surprise or two up their sleeve!

Percussion Studio Recital, Monday, October 5, 8:00 p.m., Esber Recital Hall, Music Bldg I
The recital will feature members of the Penn State Percussion Studio playing solo works on marimba, vibraphone, snare drum, and multiple percussion by the following composers: Xenakis, Burritt, Smadbeck, Payson, Gomez, Zivkovic, Sammut, Glass, Peters, Hopkins, Cirone, Rowher, De Lancey, and Sejourne

Bach's Lunch: Penn State Flute Ensemble, Thursday, October 8, 12:10 p.m., Eisenhower Chapel
The Penn State Flute Ensemble will present a program of works transcribed for flute choir, as well as pieces for solo bass and alto flutes by Edward Miller and Charles Koechlin. The performance will include a demonstration of "Forming the Flute Choir" with a presentation of works by Mozart, Schumann, and Telemann. The ten-member ensemble draws its repertoire from Baroque to contemporary literature for flute.

Essence of Joy, Sunday, October 18, 2:00 p.m., Esber Recital Hall, Music Bldg
Essence of Joy is one of ten choral ensembles in the Penn State University School of Music. Organized in November, 1991, the choir performs sacred and secular music from the African/African American traditions. Annual campus events include Fall and Spring concerts, A Celebration of African American Spirituals (February) and Our Gift In Song (December). The choir involves undergraduate and graduate students from many academic programs at Penn State.

Penn State 2009 Single Reed Summit, Friday and Saturday, October 30 and 31, various locations including Esber Recital Hall, Music Buildings I and II.
Hosted by Anthony Costa, professor of clarinet and David Stambler, professor of saxophone, the event will feature clarinetists and saxophonists in solo recitals, concerto performances with wind ensemble, master classes, clinics, and a performance competition.
