Symposium Addresses Environmentally Conscious Design

The Committee for Environmentally Conscious Architecture (CECA) in the Penn State Department of Architecture will host a symposium, “Environmentally Conscious Design: Educating Future Architects,” October 23–24 on the Penn State University Park campus. Vivian Loftness, professor in the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, will give the keynote address, open to the public, at 4 p.m. in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art.
Loftness is a nationally recognized leader in sustainable architecture education and former head of Carnegie Mellon’s Department of Architecture. She will be one of seven visiting scholars and professionals who will share their expertise in sustainable architecture education during presentations and discussions on Saturday, October 23, 8:30 a.m.–noon in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space. The event is open to the public.
In addition to Loftness, presenters include Warren T. Byrd, founding principal of Nelson, Byrd, Woltz Landscape Architects and professor emeritus of landscape architecture at the University of Virginia; Mary Guzowski, associate professor of architecture at the University of Minnesota and author of a book, Web-based design resources and numerous articles on sustainable design; Steven Moore, professor of architecture and planning at the University of Texas at Austin, director of the graduate program in sustainable design at the University of Texas and co-founder of its Center for Sustainable Development; Brook Muller, associate professor of architecture at the University of Oregon and member of the core faculty of the Environmental Studies Program; Donald Watson, FAIA, architect and planner with EarthRise Design, professor emeritus and former dean at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and former chair of the Yale School of Architecture Master of Environmental Design Program; and Margot McDonald, professor of architecture at California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo, faculty advisor for the Sustainable Environments minor and professional consultant.
