School of Theatre's Diverse Culture Workshop to Present Reading in Honor of Sculpture Dedication
September 8, 2009
The first act of A Day in the Life of a People, written and compiled by Charles Dumas, associate professor of theatre, and directed by Jean Marie Donnelly, a graduate candidate in the College of Education, will be presented by the Diverse Cultures Workshop class on September 11, 2009, at 4:30 p.m., in the Community Room of the Borough Council Building on Allen Street in Downtown State College. The reading is in honor of the dedication of the sculpture "Ascent- A Celebration of Life", created by Philadelphia artist Mark Pilato in honor of those that died on 9/11/2001. The performance is free and open to the public.
The play has been presented on the anniversary of 9/11 each year since the attacks. Last year it was chosen to be in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and presented at the State Theatre. The year before it was invited to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It premiered in 2002 at the American International School in Capetown, South Africa sponsored by The U.S. Consulate General for the diplomatic community. The play is based on eyewitness testimony and research into the lives of twelve ordinary people on 9/11 just before, during and after the attacks.
The Diverse Cultures Workshop is an undergraduate class designed to help foster and celebrate diversity through the development and presentation of theatrical events. The cast includes Jewelan Cleveland, Daren Donofrio, Angel Fonseca, Brandi Frazier- Hall, Anne Grebouski, Donise Johnson, Ryan Kramer, Andrew Lehman, Bram McGinnis, Anjannette Roczniak, Christie Stawicki, and Bahar Tabatabai.
