Daylighting study of an office façade by architecture student Matthew Brind'Amour, developed with Autodesk®The Penn State Solar Decathlon Team’s home, dubbed MorningStar Pennsylvania, features a layered south facade that allows occupants to control natural light and ventilation in the home and to customize the facade. Exterior sliding panels (ESP) are constructed from an oak tree that was sustainably harvested from the Penn State University Park campus. The ESP can be configured as shelves and used in the summer to block direct sunlight from heating the interior of the home; in the winter the shelves are folded down and slid away from the windows to allow sunlight to heat the Pennsylvania Blue Stone floor on the interior of the home. The sliding milk-bottle wall (seen through the window on the interior) filters the low winter light and provides thermal radiation for extra heat in the winter.
