marvin hamlisch shares his talents with penn state

hamlischPenn State and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra collaborated in a week of special events on the University Park campus in March. Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch and members of the orchestra participated in residency activities, concerts and discussions intended to allow students, faculty and local residents to learn from this leading music organization.

On Tuesday, March 28, Hamlisch led “Art of the Audition,” where Penn State musical theatre and vocal performance students “auditioned” for him, got his feedback, rehearsed further and auditioned again. This free event was open to the public and attendees included local high school students. On March 29, Hamlisch was the featured speaker at the Penn State Forum, the Faculty/Staff Club’s distinguished speaker series.

On March 30, the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra gave a concert in Schwab Auditorium. A discussion with concertmasters Andres Cardenes and Larry Loh preceded the performance. The chamber orchestra gave a second performance on March 31, with School of Music orchestra students. This “Side-by-Side Concert” benefited music scholarships.
